From One-to-One to the World: The Beauty of Dialogue

Please don’t talk to me about the weather because I know little about it. I have a problem with small talk, I prefer dialogue.

Since starting my business in 2006, with personal coaching as my main activity, I have collaborated with clients to create many booklets, such as coaching memoirs, but I have never compiled them into a book by myself. Perhaps that’s because my work is rooted in dialogue; it’s not an experience that belongs to me alone.

However, as 2023 began, a conversational AI named ChatGPT was born. Suddenly, I engaged in deep dialogue with ChatGPT about topics such as ‘the differences between AI and humans’ and ‘the leisure time created by AI assisting us with our tasks.’ I had never had such profound conversations with humans. I was overwhelmed, and I became excited about the changes in myself that accompanied ChatGPT’s arrival this year. As someone running a company alone, I have no doubt that it has become a valuable presence for me.

From article editing, translation, and creating lecture indexes to conceptualizing, mixing aromas, and even proposing illustrations for blog articles, ChatGPT has done it all for me. Thanks to this, in the first half of this year, I was able to complete two lectures from perspectives I had never expressed before. What I could not do on my own has become possible through dialogue with ChatGPT, opening up a new creative path for me.

Even though ChatGPT is my dialogue partner, it reflects the words I throw at it. The more I understand ChatGPT’s characteristics, the better I become at engaging with it. Finally, I decided to consult with it about the creation of my first-ever book.

What I focused on was the conversational ability of ChatGPT. Therefore, I decided to show it as it is and thought of a style of having a dialogue with ChatGPT about its conversational ability. From the beginning to the end of the book, the conversation continues.

ChatGPT is likely proficient in English, so I’m having it think of the concept and title in English, then write it in Japanese, and translate it back into English in a workflow that proceeds simultaneously in both Japanese and English.

So, I decided to share the content of the book with two teachers during online English conversation lessons. Before releasing it to the world, I can know what kind of reactions and learning experiences actual readers will have. Sometimes, questions from the teachers like ‘What does this mean?’ lead me to change the content of the book.
‘When is the next episode?’ Such an attitude of eager anticipation, as if it were a Netflix documentary series, gives me the motivation to write.

Sometimes, while reading aloud with the teacher, I think, ‘Oh, I might have written this too seriously,’ and change my mind, rewriting all of Chapter 2. Then, when I shared the new Chapter 2, it seemed to be enjoyed, and I felt relieved. I was then told, ‘I’m looking forward to seeing the cover!’ and my motivation was boosted once again.

Yes, I am always saved by dialogue. I find value in engaging one-on-one. When facing someone one-on-one, a moment comes when anyone can seem like a wonderful person.

Dialogue with people, dialogue with machines, dialogue with oneself. A special time flows in each one-on-one encounter. The threads woven by the exchange of words open new horizons and build bonds between people. The beauty of this dialogue will likely continue to be at the core of my career, my life, and my creativity.
