Locating your value.

You are so used to being you that it is very difficult to see yourself and judge the merits of you actions especially when you are just being yourself.

A regular client of mine wanted to think about the topic of “Her value Inventory”.

She said it was because she was curious about last week’s newsletter about 「my Benjamin Button」 and she was thinking about professional existence. What does she have to offer?

When I asked her first about her value, which she knows herself to have, she answered about her personality.

Then I asked her, “Why did you want to know your value in the first place?” And she said, “Maybe I’ve lost my confidence since I left the company because I don’t talk to people.”

It’s true that if one is not working, one may not receive as much feedback or appreciation, so it may be harder to know one’s value.

I have been running a business on my own and even though I have seen an increase in sales and appreciation from my clients, I have lost sight of the value of my existence. What does this mean?

When I attended a listening course, even though I was in the middle of a lecture, I was moved to tears by the words of an 80 year old professor. He said, “If you are obsessed with results, you will never know the value of your existence”.

And when I talked to a spiritual counselor about my value, he said, “Why else would your clients help you with your work? Isn’t that where you have your value?” It’s certainly not possible with any other coach. I had indeed fallen into the trap of being so attached to the outcome that I didn’t see my value.

“What is the thing that people rely on you for, that’s just you being you?”

“What do you inspire people to do just by being you?”

Rather, it is where you are just being you that you can find your value. Then I started to appreciate what the people around me were doing for me.

Qualifications are one measure of worth, but around you are people who know your value in real time. Accept compliments. You just say “Thank you.”

And to find your value, don’t just take stock of your past, but also look at the areas where you can develop your value in the future. If you are going to be a professional, it is even more so. Let’s create your new value!
