Resonating Creativity: The Depth of Art Born from Connections with Others
An audience of one real person is better than an imaginary audience of thousands. Find your Theo and make meaningful art for him.
“Van Gogh Alive” arrived in Tokyo, offering an experience that transcended a mere painting exhibition. Utilizing projection mapping technology, this exhibition allowed visitors to immerse themselves directly into the world of paintings. In a venue lined with huge screens, Vincent van Gogh’s works were displayed in chronological order, accompanied by the powerful sound reminiscent of a live orchestra performance, creating an unparalleled sense of presence. The exhibition was enriched with numerous quotes from Van Gogh’s correspondence with his brother Theo, providing a luxurious moment to savor his works. These quotes served as clues to deeply understand the intentions and messages embedded in Van Gogh’s art, enhancing the emotional impact.
Particularly striking was Vincent van Gogh’s assertion, “If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” Details unnoticed in paintings hung on walls became visible when magnified on large screens. In portraits, the diversity in the color of people’s eyes – blue, gray, green, brown – and unconventional hair colors like pink, green, and light blue, revealed how Van Gogh translated his perceptions directly into his use of color. Van Gogh must have found beauty even in human faces. The moment visitors realize this thought, they touch the soul of Van Gogh, experiencing a profound emotional impact. Such experiences are likely one of the reasons why Van Gogh’s works continue to be cherished by many.
The experience of this exhibition holds an important lesson for creators: the presence of someone you wish to communicate with significantly influences the quality of your expression. I have come to realize this truth through my own experiences. In business, too, everything begins with finding your audience.
I recently launched a new Instagram account. As a life coach, I had been intending to share my thoughts but had struggled to get started. However, a realization came to me while writing a newsletter last week: I hope my niece will develop her philosophy. I decided to send her daily videos with explanations and to share these on social media as well. Just as Van Gogh sketched his ideas for Theo in letters, having someone specific in mind to communicate with can make the message more heartfelt and resonate more with others.
The desire to communicate brings about new changes in our communication style and creativity. We strive to deeply understand the recipient, and in the process, our inner selves become enriched. We learn that creative approaches and innovative expressions are essential for effectively transmitting messages.
Such creative processes lead to new self-discoveries and take us on a journey of self-transcendence through contributing to and impacting others. By doing something for others, we gain a broader perspective, better understand humanity, and find meaning and purpose in life.
